IRU & TIR

What is IRU?
IRU (International Road Transport Union) was established in 1948 in Geneva, Switzerland. As an international organization for the road transport industry, IRU has members and operates in over 80 countries worldwide. At the same time, IRU is authorized by the United Nations to manage the only global cross-border freight customs system, the TIR system. IRU is not only the spokesperson for the global road transport industry but also an important partner to international organizations such as the United Nations, the European Union, the World Bank, and the World Customs Organization. IRU primarily relies on its national road transport association members across various countries to serve the road transport industry, holding significant influence in the international community.
What is TIR?
TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) is an international customs transit system that facilitates the movement of goods across borders by road. It was created under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and is managed by the International Road Transport Union (IRU). The TIR system allows goods to be transported across multiple countries with minimal border checks, as long as they are sealed in a TIR carnet (a customs document) and the transit routes are pre-approved. This reduces delays, paperwork, and ensures customs duties and taxes are only paid at the destination, rather than at every border crossing. In essence, it provides a secure and streamlined way to move goods internationally by road, with the guarantee that customs controls are simplified, and the goods are protected during transit.
